BOCA Building Officials and Code Administration
Backfill Earth or earthen material used to fill around a foundation or the act of doing so.
Backer Rod A flexible, compressible strip of plastic foam inserted into a joint to limit the depth to which the sealant can penetrate.
Balcony A second floor deck (exterior) or extension of the second floor (interior) that is supported by cantilevering the floor or running angled braces.
Balloon Framing A continuously framed wall from top of subfloor to underside of rafters or outlookers.
BDL Bundle
Beam A structural member used to support a load(s) between two points.
Bearing Wall A wall that is used to support floor and/or roof loads.
Black Log Color unstained logs will reach after exposure to sun and rain.  This can be bleached out.
Bleeding A migration of a liquid to the surface of a component or into/onto an adjacent material.
Blocking Pieces of wood inserted tightly between joists, studs or rafters in a building frame to help stabilize the structure, inhibit the passage of fire, provide a nailing surface or retain insulation.
Blue Stain Blue colored stripe in wood formed by a fungus which enters a freshly cut log and feeds off the sugars in the sap wood.  This does not affect the strength or durability of the wood.
Bolt A fastener of a cylindrical metal body with a head at one end and threaded on the other.  Intended to be inserted through holes in adjoining material and closed with a nut.
Bracing Diagonal members, either temporary or permanent, installed to stabilize a structure against lateral loads.
Bridging Bracing or blocking installed between joists (wood or steel) at the midpoint to stabilize them from buckling or twisting.  In some cases used to permit adjacent joists to share loads.
Building Code A set of legal restrictions intended to ensure a minimum standard of health and safety in a building.
Bumpout A wall that extends out further than the rest of the wall.
Bumpup A rise in the roofline to accommodate a window or just to dress up and elevation.
Bundle Logs banded together ready for delivery
Butt End The full round end of the log representing the diameter of the log.
Butt-n-Pass Corner style where each course passes over the one below it.
Butyl Type of non-curing and non-skinning sealant made from butylene. Usually used for internal applications.
